"How much will it cost?" is the first question nearly everyone asks. The honest answer is that it depends on the job. That isn't very useful on its own, though, so below are typical ranges for Niagara homes, plus the factors that move the price.
Please note: these are general, typical ranges for professionally painted interiors in Ontario, including paint and materials. They are not quotes. Your price depends on your home, and you'll get one fixed price in writing after a free visit.
Typical interior price ranges
| Project | Typical range* |
|---|---|
| Small room or bathroom (walls only) | $300 – $600 |
| Average bedroom (walls, two coats) | $400 – $800 |
| Bedroom with ceiling, trim and door | $700 – $1,200 |
| Living room or open main-floor space | $800 – $2,000+ |
| Stairwell or two-storey foyer | $600 – $1,500+ |
| Kitchen cabinets (doors, boxes, primer + enamel) | $3,000 – $7,000+ |
| Whole interior, average 3-bedroom home | $4,000 – $10,000+ |
*Typical ranges only. They vary by job size, surface condition, colours, ceiling height and paint choice.
What pushes the price up or down
- Surface condition. Cracked plaster, many nail holes, water stains or peeling paint all need repair and primer first. Older homes in places like downtown St. Catharines or Niagara Falls often need more prep.
- Colour changes. Going from dark to light, or covering a strong red or navy, may need a primer coat or a third coat.
- Ceilings, trim and doors. Walls alone are the quickest. Trim, doors and ceilings each add careful brush work.
- Height and access. High ceilings, vaulted rooms and stairwells need extra equipment and time.
- Number of colours. Accent walls and different colours in each room add cutting-in time.
- Paint quality. Premium paint costs more per can, but it usually covers better and lasts longer.
- Furniture and access. Empty rooms are faster. Full rooms need moving and protection.
Why we quote one fixed price
We don't bill by the hour. After a free visit, you get one fixed price in writing that spells out exactly what's included: rooms, surfaces, prep, primer, number of coats, colours and clean-up. If the job takes us longer than planned, that's on us, not you.
How to compare painting quotes
- Check that each quote covers the same surfaces (walls, ceilings, trim, doors).
- Ask how many coats are included and which paint brand and line will be used.
- Ask what prep is included, like patching, caulking, sanding and spot-priming.
- Make sure it's a written, fixed price and not an hourly estimate that can grow.
